Such planting is very apt to result in total failure, for should those of either one sex or the other be killed it leaves no reserve to draw on. Of course the birds should be liberated in pairs. We believe a few words of explanation would check any dissatisfaction arising from an entire shipment being planted in one county. The method most approved is to take the crate containing the birds to the point of liberation in the evening. It should be placed near a hedge or cover of some sort, a supply of water placed nearby and food sufficient to last for several days scattered in the immediate vicinity. A slat should be removed from the crate or an opening made in the canvas, as the case may be, so that the birds may escape one at a time without being frightened. The birds should not be disturbed by man in any way for several days until they become accustomed to their new home. In case the section where the birds are to be planted is frequented by foxes, they should be liberated before dawn in place of in the evening. Failure can equally be attributed to the fact that many birds have undoubtedly been planted in America in sections where food and climate were both entirely different from their native habitat.
